Abstract
This is a cross-sectional study using a stratified and nonproportional sampling method from 16 Korean middle schools. Each province, except Jeju Island, was represented in the study. Entire classes in the schools were used for a total of 300 students from each school. Researchers visited the schools, distributed and collected questionnaires for a period of two weeks between April 25, and May 10, 2007. The questionnaires that were incomplete were discarded. The questionnaires of 4, 170 students were analyzed. The data yielded the following:First: The drinking rate of males was 27.4% and the rate for females was 26.7%.Second: The binge drinking rate for males was 5.9% and 7.2 for females (5 standard drinks for males and 4 drinks for females).Third: The school records for binge drinking students were lower in ranking than other students (p=.000). Binge drinkers tended to report more feelings of severe stress (p=.000), dissatisfaction with school life and academic work (p=.000).Fourth: Students from single parent families tended to drink more than students from stable families (p=.000). The urge to drink was higher (p=.000), problem behaviors among these students were higher (p=.000), and the binge drinking rate was higher (p=.000).Fifth: Binge drinking students reported a higher rate of abuse of alcohol, cigarette and mass-media such as computer and the internet (p=.000).Sixth: The rates of the urge to drink, the attitudes to drinking, and the problem behavior after drinking were higher for those of binge drinkers than for those of Korean middle school students (p=.000).
